Faint Tappings at the Wrong Window edition by Mr John L G Pratt John L G Pratt Dr Michele Drouart Literature Fiction eBooks

"Faint Tappings at the Wrong Window" is a picaresque or 'road' novel, set in and between Sydney, Adelaide and Nimbin, a small town in Northern New South Wales that became the centre of the counter-culture after the Aquarius Festival in 1973. The novel shows with great humour that the movement in Australia had a character of its own - almost like its equivalents in Europe and America but with differences that are uniquely Australian. It also chronicles the dramatic events of the dismissal of the Whitlam Government from a wholly new viewpoint. The 'hero' is a man who cannot find his rightful place in either 'straight' or 'alternative' society but in his travels assumes responsibility for finding a stray dog a home. The well-rounded characters are engaging and entertaining, dealing with the many twists and turns of the plot philosophically (for the most part) and leaving the reader feeling richer for having known them. The author uses language that is fresh and lively ... and, being set in Australia, occasionally coarse ... but also demonstrates great skill in story-telling. The pace is relentless from start to finish - but not without spaces to catch one's breath and reconsider the way in which one looks at the world.

Faint Tappings at the Wrong Window edition by Mr John L G Pratt John L G Pratt Dr Michele Drouart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
For anyone who wasn't there and has a yearning to know what the counter-culture was really like in Australia in the `60s and `70s - look no further.
John Pratt's beautifully and humorously written book is insightful as well as observational.
The narrative starts at Sydney's Paddington markets and relates the tale of a bewildered Everyman who is eager to taste the nectar of life and fit into the free-loving milieu, but cannot quite shake free from the restraints of the straight nine-to-five existence, no matter how hard he tries.
George is a former teacher, who drops out and heads north, up to Nirvana-central in the northern New South Wales rainforest town of Nimbin.
This little town on the coastal edge of the banana belt was - and to a large extent still is - hippie heartland. There are scores of laidback, dole-dependent communards living in clusters up in the banana plantations in the backblocks, where there is love to go around (and around), smoking dope and head-bending acid aplenty, space to crash for a night or a year, and whole foods to share (so long as someone remembers to cook and wash the dishes).
Once he reaches his chosen commune, George finds that too often he's the putz doing the cleaning or the washing, and ultimately he feels no more at ease or at home here than he did back in his city life.
Partway along his journey of life between the commune and back to the city, George finds his guru in the form of a talking dog, which he calls Chopin. The dog tells it like it is and sets George straight on all manner of philosophical issues, whether or not George chooses to accept his theories. The dog doesn't really care, while George is desperately seeking answers.
One has the sneaky suspicion that more than a little of this tale is author-autobiographical and, if so, it's even more believable and reflective of the hollow nature of the pursuits of the lotus-eaters.
Author John Pratt is by turns sharply perceptive and raucously funny, and the whole tale is dressed in elegantly turned prose. I admit to feeling a tad let down at the abrupt ending, but have to presume this will lead into a sequel of the narrative.
This book is very well written and makes the characters come to life. One can empathise with "George" and feel part of his journey. His care of and concern for "Chopin" strike a chord with dog lovers and one keeps hoping there will be a successful outcome. This book keeps the reader's attention and interest to the end. Well done, Mr Pratt!
For all compassionate dog lovers and those who enjoy a road story, this book by John Pratt is an entertaining read. The central character, George, finds himself master and commander of a high-bred homeless hound who has an agenda of his own. We find George experiencing a variety of desperate situations all for the sake of finding the beast a home, at the same time trying to manage his own survival as an out of work actor seeking the bliss state in Nirvanaland. The setting is 70s Australia at the tail end of the hippie era. Pratt's penmanship is cleverly erudite, funny and he peppers his prose with bites of wisdom. A thoroughly enjoyable novel from start to finish! I look forward to more from this author.
I usually read action type novels/books, but this book was recommended by a friend of mine.
Once I started reading it I found it hard to put down as many passages really appealed to my sense of humour, and I found myself laughing out loud many times.
As I tend to speed read I read the book again shortly after I had finished it, in case I missed anything!
There are many turns of phrase that, to me, jump out at you like a surprise guests.
I have had the book alongside me on the couch for sometime now and open at any page to refresh my memory, from time to time.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has a good sense of humour and can see the the funny side of life.
